There are no prerequisites or quizzes.  This is designed for the interested, new or veteran investigator.

 

Who are your target students?

All new investigators, as well as experienced looking for a refresher.  This is not for the expert level investigator.

Cell Phone Basics for Legal Investigations

This covers the foundational basics of why cell phone activity can be important to your case, and how to obtain the information.

- This is NOT about cell phone forensics, or any digital forensics.

- This is about the investigative importance of non-forensic (and semi-forensic) data.

Location data, calendars, contacts, activities down to the minute, GPS tracking.

What Data Can Be Recovered From Cell Phones
Depending on the phone and service, and with permission of the owner or user, a subpoena, or a court order, data may include:
•    Phone calls and text messages with date, time, duration, location and incoming/outgoing numbers.
•    Web browsing activity
•    Social media activity
•    Calendar, work, hobby, family and other events
•    Cell phone tower, phone and other location data
•    Billing information

How Is This Data Obtained

Depending on the data requested you may need owner or user permission, subpoena, or court order
•    Billing information with phone call and text message date, time and duration may be available from the customer.
•    Subscriber data may be available from the company.
•    Location and cell tower information may be available from the company.
